The pants gifted are a little small in the waist, but you can return them. The gift-giver has the receipt. The only problem is that she wants you to love them.
But the real gift is that they are small.
You can ask for the receipt and lie, noting that they aren’t your style, but that may hurt her feelings.
You can hide them in your closet and pretend not to see them.
Or, you can be honest and say that you want to wear them, but it will require a little work and a little discipline.
Each of the above responses is a gift because the response reveals something about your character.
You either lie, hide, or take on the challenge. It’s up to you. The gift-giver may have even done this on purpose as an assessment of character– you can call it shame or frame it as a loving challenge.
The pants are feedback.
